Care & Use
Reed & Barton sterling flatware, like anything of value, requires some simple care guidelines to maintain its lustrous beauty. Please follow these instructions and enjoy using your sterling flatware every day and for special occasions throughout the year. Over time, a beautiful patina develops giving each piece of sterling a wonderful, soft, glowing finish.
- Wash sterling promptly after each use. Avoid extended contact with acidic foods or foods that cause corrosion such as salt, mayonnaise, or eggs. Don't allow food to dry on sterling as it can cause staining.
- Hand washing is the preferred method of care. Avoid soaking your sterling in water for extended periods of time. Use a mild, non - lemon, liquid detergent in hot water, rinse thoroughly in hot water, and dry each piece promptly with a soft cloth to prevent water spots. Put away when completely dry.
- Sterling silver can be washed in the dishwasher, although it is not recommended. Avoid lemon scented detergents and those containing chloride. Sterling flatware should be washed in the dishwasher separately, and never together with stainless flatware. Remove it before the intense heat of the drying cycle and dry with a soft towel to avoid water spots.
- Your sterling should be stored in a Reed & Barton Handcrafted Flatware Chest or Drawer Liner with Tarnish-resistant silver cloth.
- Sterling silver should be polished occasionally with anti-tarnish, non-abrasive polish such as Hagerty, to restore its brilliant luster. Dips and solutions are not recommended as they may remove the oxidation that enhances the detail in your pattern.
